Biostatistics
Biostatistics is a branch of applied statistics and is concerned with developing and using techniques to summarize and analyze medical and biological data. The teaching and research programs prepare the student to be part of an interdisciplinary team for conducting medical and public health research. Students learn to extract and report data from existing databases, to create new databases as appropriate, and to analyze these data.

Community Health Sciences
The department trains future leaders in public health, conducts research in population-based health strategies, and carries out community public health projects linked to teaching and research. Majors are offered in three areas: maternal and child health; health education and communication; and nutrition.

Environmental Health Sciences
The department offers graduate and professional training in environmental health sciences. In addition to successfully completing the core requirements, students must select an area of specialty that develops their knowledge, skill, and competence in a specific area of environmental health sciences.

Epidemiology
Epidemiology may be defined as the study of the distribution and determinants of disease and disability in populations. It's one of the basic sciences of public health and preventive medicine. The department has substantial strength in the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV and AIDS, and cardiovascular disease.

Health Systems Management
The department prepares men and women for management careers in the health care system. It is organized following a unique practitioner-educator model which fully integrates the academic curriculum housed in the school and the management practice environment of New Orleans health care organizations including physician practices, long term care facilities, managed care organizations, and hospitals. This model provides students and faculty with access to vertically integrated health care organizations and helps to ensure that students graduate with an optimal blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The practitioner-educator philosophy of the department is further evidenced by the careful recruitment of full-time faculty with professional experience in clinical or management practice. Many continue to consult in areas relevant to their academic disciplines and are active in local, regional, national or international health care delivery, and health policy.

International Health and Development
The department is dedicated to improving the health status of populations throughout the world. The teaching and research programs emphasize interdisciplinary, creative problem-solving in the health and social sectors. The teaching program addresses the needs of young and mid-career professionals who intend to work outside the United States, with international organizations, or in multicultural contexts.

The curriculum and applied learning opportunities draw upon Tulane's extensive overseas research, technical assistance work, and more than twenty years of experience in providing leadership training in international health to students from around the world.

Tropical Medicine
The department has a long and proud history of contributions to parasitology and tropical medicine. Teaching and research are based on the epidemiology of tropical diseases, and frequently involve field studies on site in developing countries. The basic science program in parasitology is now based on molecular and cellular biology and emphasizes malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.
